Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal TherapyRoot canal treatment is performed when decay will likely damage or has already killed a tooth. During a root canal, the dentist will remove the pulp from the center of a tooth and fill the pulp cavity.  A root canal can also be used to treat an abscessed tooth. This treatment can relieve toothache, stop infection, and promote healing.

In general, a Root Canal Treatment will involve the following steps:
  • First, the dentist will inject a local anesthetic to numb the affected area. Sometimes nitrous oxide gas will be used to reduce pain and help you relax.
  • The dentist may separate the decayed tooth from the other teeth with a device called a rubber damn, which also helps stop debris from entering your mouth and throat during the procedure.
  • The dentist will remove the pulp from the tooth using a drill and other instruments, and then fill the inside part of the tooth with medicines, temporary filling materials (if required), and a final root canal filling.
  • After the decay has been removed, the dentist takes an impression of the tooth. A labratory uses the impression to make a crown that perfectly matches the tooth.
  • The tooth will be fitted with a temporary crown until the permanent crown is made and cemented into place.
After a root canal, you may have pain which you can treat with ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or a stronger prescription painkiller that the dentist will prescribe. The pain usually lasts only a day or two.
